Review of the IOT / WT Innovation World Cup® 2017/18

The IOT/WT Innovation World Cup® 2017/18 kicked off in March 2017; spanning almost a year, the competition received 940 innovative solutions in the IoT and Wearable tech spaces. Two editions of the Finalist Pitch and Award Ceremony viz. the Wearable Technologies Pitch and Award Ceremony in Munich (January) and the IoT Pitch and Award Ceremony in Barcelona (February) took place.

Out of a big list of applicants, only a bit over 30 finalists were selected to pitch their solutions on stage in both events. Following categories were presented: City | Retail | Home | Lifestyle | Healthcare | Industrial | Transport | Sports & Fitness.  In addition, the winners for the special prizes powered by our partners: AIQ Smart Clothing Challenge | EBV Elektronik’s IOT HERO | Geeny Connected Living Challenge | LoRaWAN™ Challenge  | Gemalto Security Award were awarded.

A bench of international experts chose 7 top innovators who won the WT Innovation World Cup® 2017/18 and became part of our Hall of fame. Clubbed with exciting presentations and panel discussions, the competition perfectly complemented our partner’s  WT |Wearable Technologies’ conference. Review of the IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® 2016/17

The pitch and award ceremony of the 5th IOT/M2M Innovation World Cup® was fantastic! Hosted by our official Spanish partner ACCIO, the award ceremony was held for the first time inside the Mobile World Congress – the largest gathering for the mobile industry held in Barcelona. 26 finalists took the stage to pitch their outstanding solutions to an audience of investors, media, executives and Mobile World Congress attendees.

The 6 most innovative Internet of Things companies to watch in 2017 were announced straight after the elevator pitches, and here they are: Senlab, Immotor, Tunnel, Tosibox (in both Industrial and Security), SmartyPans and Techsource Europe.

The trophies were presented to the finalists by representatives of the IOT/M2M Innovation World Cup® 2016/17 sponsors: Remi De-Fouchier and Manfred Kube of Gemalto, as well as Martin Gebler from Bosch Group.

Review of WT | Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup® 2016/17

The world champions in wearables were announced at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference EUROPE 2017 on February 7th in Munich. 29 out of 400 registered contestants were nominated to become the Innovators of the Year in 6 different categories. The decision was made by an international expert jury. Read the official press release here.

The WT | Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup® 2017, with its sponsors STMicroelectronics, AiQ, VARTA Microbattery and Cicor, is the worldwide leading innovation competition in the area of wearable technologies. The competition, with prizes worth over $300,000 is designed to inspire and stimulate excellent next-generation solutions with the potential of becoming real marketable products. In this year’s edition 2016/17, submissions have been made in the categories “Sports & Fitness”, “Healthcare & Wellness”, “Safety & Security”, “Gaming & Lifestyle”, and the special prize categories “Smart Clothing” & “Smart Jewelry”.

Review of the IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® 2015/16

The Award Ceremony in Barcelona on the 24th of February 2016 was a great success. Out of almost 400 submissions only 25 companies were selected as IOT Heroes 2016. Almost all finalists came to Barcelona to present their solutions in the categories Connected Home, Smart City, Mobility, Security, and Healthcare.

The best of the best in Internet of Things were announced right after the elevator pitches: MYXYTY, EverCharge, Kizy Tracking, Swissprime Technologies, and Quanticare Technologies.

The trophies were handed over by the representatives of the IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® sponsors: Gerhard Schedler from Swisscom, Joe Braga from Telit, Marc Naddell from MediaTek Labs, Matthias Dorsch from VARTA Microbattery and Alex Hansmann from Gemalto.

Review of WT | Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup® 2015/16

With more than 450 registered contestants from 60 countries the WT | Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup® was a great success. Almost all finalists presented their innovative products live on stage at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference Europe, on January 26th in Munich. It was truly an innovation wild fire! Afterwards the official ceremony started with a fulminant award movie. The trophies were handed over by the representatives of the WT Innovation World Cup® sponsors: Andrea Onetti (STMicroelectronics), Abbas Sumar (MediaTek Labs), Philipp Miehlich (VARTA Microbattery), Steve Huang (AiQ), and Beat Marbacher (Cicor).

Review of IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® 2014/15

All submitted solutions were judged and reviewed by an international team of experts against a set of criteria including degree of innovation, business potential and go-to-market approach. The finalists and winners were announced at the Mobile World Congress, hosted by title sponsor Ericsson, on March 3rd, 2015 in Barcelona.

The official award ceremony and announcement of the overall winner took place at SWISSCOM M2M Day in Zurich, on March 12th, 2015.

The IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® took off the 20th of May 2014 at the annual M2M Forum in Milan. Having attracted the interest of developers worldwide, the IOT / M2M Innovation World Cup® closed its database the 15th of November 2014 with impressive solutions. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of the participants as well as to our partners for their involvement.

Evolve Insurance Award 2013/14 for Allianz Digital Accelerator

Allianz Digital Accelerator created the “Evolve Insurance Award” to foster the development of smart wearable devices and cloud solutions that have an impact on safe living. The Evolve Insurance Award looked for business model and service innovations with an impact on the insurance business.


“Phone as a Wearable Hub Award” for leading chipset manufacturer during the WT Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup® 2013/14

New appcessories are launched every day. For most of them smartphones are the communication hubs. For this reason, the Wearable Technologies Group and a leading chipset manufacturer created this dedicated award: The “Phone as a Wearable Hub Award” honored innovative solutions using a smartphone as a hub for wearable devices like wristbands, heads-up displays (HUD), and smart watches.


“Geo Award” – powered by CloudEO at the Cloud Innovation World Cup® 2013-2015

The Cloud Innovation World Cup®, a global competition for innovations within the segment cloud computing, partnered with CloudEO, an online collaboration platform that enables to create, interpret, use, and market geo content and services. With this partnership, Innovation World Cup® Series and CloudEO created the “Geo Award” to seek solutions to integrate geospatial information and provide additional benefit to the cloud based service offered.


M2M Challenge 2012-2014

The M2M Challenge, a leading award in the field of machine-to-machine (m2m) communications, was initiated in 2012 with partners Swisscom, Ericsson, Telit and VARTA Microbattery. Since the contest was first launched, hundreds of participants submitted their innovative solution(s) in the M2M field. The contest became a huge success, gathering the attention of further important industry players such as Intel, Gemalto and MediaTek, which became partners of the open innovation platform. Since 2014, the M2M Challenge runs under the name IoT / M2M Innovation World Cup®, which is the leading innovation competition in the IoT / M2M field. 


European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) 2004-2010

The ESNC, the world´s largest and most successful innovation competition for satellite navigation, was set up and organized by Navispace AG from 2004-2010. During this period of time, a whole ecosystem of around 20 international regions and 180 experts were set up. Since its inception, thousands of participants joined the competition. The contest is today the leading global network in the segment of global navigation systems, looking for new products, services and innovative businesses in the satellite navigation sector to encourage the use of satellite navigation in people´s everyday life.


Bluetooth Innovation World Cup® 2009-2011

The Bluetooth Innovation World Cup®, organized by Navispace AG for the Bluetooth SIG –  received submissions from hundreds developers around the world. The ideas made use of the unique characteristics of Bluetooth low energy technology, such as very low power consumption, and the possibility of transforming entire industries with a simple, secure and super-efficient networking technology.
