MedicubeX from Finland offers an “eHealth Station™” that enables autonomous self-measurement of vital signs to assess cardiovascular and diabetes risk, alongside real-time doctor-patient interaction. MedicubeX secured second place at the 16th Healthcare Innovation World Cup®.
We had an insightful discussion with the MedicubeX team. Let’s take a look at their journey and the steps they followed to reach this remarkable milestone.
1.HOW DID IT ALL START?
Our journey at MedicubeX began from a shared passion for proactive healthcare. The seed of the idea was planted when myself and my co-founder, Heikki Rautajoki, met in 2016 during a research project focused on non-invasive diabetes screening. We were both driven by the potential to make preventive health monitoring more accessible and efficient, officially founding MedicubeX in March 2020 to bring this vision to life.
When it came to our name, we wanted to create a brand that would give any person, regardless of their background, a rough idea of what we do. We knew we wanted to target an international market, so we chose words shared across basically all European languages. “Medi” points to our medical purpose and “Cube” refers to our self-service eHealth Station™. The “X” signifies the exponential potential of our technology. The name is designed to be intuitive and universal.
2. WHAT ARE THE KEY MILESTONES YOU HAVE REACHED SO FAR?
The past few years have been a whirlwind of progress and significant achievements for MedicubeX. We are incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished in a relatively short time.
Successful Funding: We have secured significant funding to fuel our growth, over 5 M€ to date. This has been a mix of equity funding, with support from Business Finland. This financial backing has been instrumental in our product development and international expansion.
Product Launch and Market Entry: The launch of our MedicubeX eHealth Station™ has been a pivotal moment. These stations are now operational in various locations, including university hospitals, occupational healthcare and primary care alike. feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, both from patients and healthcare professionals.
Strategic Partnerships: We believe in the power of collaboration. We have forged strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as Innokas Medical for device development and manufacturing, Framery for the award-winning acoustic booth design, Diagnoptics for the advanced AGE Reader technology, and LightHearted AI for their LightScope. These partnerships have been crucial in creating a world-class product.
International Expansion: While our roots are in Finland, our ambitions have always been global. We are actively in negotiations to expand our operations to new countries. We have already delivered our eHealth Stations to the UK, Germany, Latvia and Estonia, marking significant steps in our international journey.
3. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED?
One of our biggest hurdles was the sheer technical challenge of building a complex product in a heavily regulated market. We were utilizing existing partner hardware alongside our own custom technology, and getting everything related to data transfer and synchronization with user actions right was a significant challenge. We solved this by developing a robust, modular architecture—both in hardware and software. This makes it possible for us to adapt to any third-party components we include now or in the future, ensuring our platform is both stable and scalable.
The one thing I would never change is our unwavering commitment to our user-centric design and our core mission to make healthcare more accessible. This has guided every decision we’ve made and is the foundation of our success.
For upcoming start-ups, my recommendation is to be relentlessly focused. Build a great team, solve a real-world problem, but most of all, be resilient. The path is never linear, so learn from setbacks, adapt, and keep moving forward.
4. WHAT IS COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
The future for MedicubeX is incredibly exciting. We are on a trajectory of rapid growth and innovation.
Our immediate focus is on scaling our operations and accelerating our international expansion across Europe. We are also preparing for large-scale commercial deliveries of our eHealth Stations.
In the near future, you will see a significant strengthening of our sales and marketing efforts as we build our brand and reach a wider audience.
We will also continue to innovate, with plans to further develop the capabilities of our eHealth Station™, integrating new measurement technologies and enhancing our data analytics to provide even more valuable insights for both individuals and healthcare providers. We are on track to become the leading platform for preventive health monitoring.
5. DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY IN THE HEALTHCARE WORLD CUP® AND BEING THE TOP TECHPRENEUR?
Our journey in the 16th Healthcare Innovation World Cup® 2024 was a phenomenal experience, and being named the 2nd place winner was a powerful validation of our vision. Hearing the results sparked real joy, as the level of competitors was incredibly high. With over 340 companies participating, it truly felt like a real win—something I would not have dared to expect.
What impressed us most was the sheer diversity and ingenuity of the solutions presented. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many brilliant minds dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges.
Our key takeaway is the immense global need for innovative healthcare solutions. The experience energized our team and opened up new opportunities for collaboration and growth. We are more motivated than ever to continue our mission.
6. YOUR THREE TIPS FOR UP-COMING STARTUPS
For aspiring entrepreneurs and future participants, here are my three key pieces of advice:
- Prioritize and Keep Your Eyes on the Goal: This is the most critical advice I can give. Nothing that might happen in some distant future matters if your company doesn’t make it there. Focus relentlessly on the immediate milestones that create value and ensure your survival and growth.
- Deliver What Customers Want: Tell a compelling story, but back it up with a product that solves a real problem. Deliver what your customers want and need, and then make sure your potential investors know that you have achieved this product-market fit.
- Demonstrate Traction: A great idea is just the beginning. Show tangible progress—pilot projects, early sales, key partnerships. This demonstrates to investors and partners that you can execute your vision and turn it into a viable business.
‘’We participated in the Innovation World Cup® to benchmark our solution against the best in the world and to gain international visibility. Beyond the incredible honor of being a finalist and a winner, the competition provided us with a platform to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers. The exposure and networking opportunities have been invaluable in accelerating our international growth strategy‘’
